Lakhor Prayer Wheels, Bhutan

A prayer wheel is a cylindrical  wheel and spindle made from made from wood, metal, stone or coarse cotton.

At the core of the cylinder is a “life tree” often made of wood or metal with certain mantras or sacred chants wrapped around it.Thousands (or in the case of larger prayer wheels, millions) of mantras are then wrapped around this life tree.

Buddhist texts regarding prayer wheels, spinning such a wheel will have much the same meritorious effect as reciting orally .

Lakhor Prayer Wheels are large wheels set side by side in a row. Passersby can turn the entire row of wheels simply by sliding their hands over each one.

The Lakhor prayer wheels are usually found in monasteries or in large buildings.  People usually walk clockwise as they seek blessings through turning each of these wheels.
