Young Girl in Gujarat, India

A young girl from a village in Gujarat wearing  silver and bone jewellery and brightly coloured and intricately embroidered skirt and blouse.

In certain tribes of  Gujarat, women carry their entire personal  wealth on their bodies. Silver rather than gold is the preferred metal. Unique nose rings, arm bands and heavy solid silver anklets sometimes weighing more than 2 kg are worn and hardly ever removed. This is the  dowry that a woman  wears with pride . The style of jewellery differs among different tribes  and indicates the social standing as well.
