Elephants in Hindu Temple Art, Karnataka, India(2)

 

Elephants are a favourite subject in Hindu and Buddhist iconography from ancient times in India. They appear individually, in panels of  several as well as the vehicle of certain  divinities such  as Indra . They can be portrayed as raging war elephants or  as gentle temple elephants carrying a lotus in their trunk.
