29. ‘Bright Young Things’ , Karnataka, India

I had stopped at a post office in a small-town of Karnataka to buy stamps to send postcards back to England. As I emerged from the post office I noticed that the primary school opposite the post office had rung the closing bell for the day and the girls and boys were trooping home.

I saw a particularly bright-looking child with a flower stuck in her head band. I complimented her on the flower and soon enough was surrounded by several of her friends and her little brother. Another girl broke into giggles when I asked her how she had liked the day’s lessons. They asked me where I was from, who the post cards were for and did I have any British coin to show them as they were being taught about coins in school. The 50p UK coin delighted them and they ran back into school to show it their teacher.

In the four southern Indian states of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. education is highly valued for both boys and girls. Even the poorest of parents will aim to provide the best education they can afford for their children for a better future.

I have rendered these future software engineers, teachers, law-givers and scientists on canvas.
