Photography within the second largest salt mine in the world at Khewra in Pakistan
The Khewra Salt Mine (or Mayo Salt Mine) is located in Khewra in Pakistan. The mine is located in the Salt range of the Potowar plateau. The mine is famous for its production of pink Khewra salt. The salt reserves at Khewra were discovered when Alexander of Macedonia crossed the Jhelum river on his attempted assault on India The mine was discovered, however, not by Alexander , but by his army’s horses, when they were found licking the stones. Ailing horses of his army also recovered after licking the rock salt stones. The crystalline layers of the rock salt and gypsum create beautiful sparkles , texture and forms on the walls and ceiling, T0 me they seemed to be mines of diamonds, rubies, of coral reefs , of starry skies and stellar scenes. Moving through the mine you feel you have passed through rainbows, cascades and entered an alien landscape.
