Petroglyphs – Wadi Rum, Jordan

The dark contrast offered by the red sandstone  boulders and cliffs  at Wadi rum offered an ideal engraving surface for Man from Neolithic times to the early Islamic period .  Using a simple stone chisel,   incising, pecking, carving, and abrading  the surface would expose the inner lighter layer of rock to create amazing petroglyphs found at Alameleh and Anfashieh in Wadi Rum , Jordan.

Petroglyphs are images created by removing part of a rock’s surface and there are over  25,000 petroglyphs and 20,000 inscriptions all over the desert of  Wadi Rum, a World Heritage site.
