4. Badami Mangoes

On my way through Bagalkot district of Karnataka, South India en route to the world heritage centre of Badami, I chanced to meet this lovely lady selling mangoes, fresh greens and cauliflower from her own garden. These were the world famous variety of Badami mangoes, somewhat similar to Alphonso but they ripen earlier. The mangoes were so delicious; the scene simply had to be painted!

The Hindu lady’s tattoos represent the village she comes from and the emblem of her family deity.

Badami itself was the ancient capital of the powerful Chalukya empire established in 543 CE in Southern India. The cave temples, architecture and sculptures of Badami are some of the most amazing in the world.
