21. ”Guarding the Castle” at Thimphu, Bhutan

In my opinion, Bhutanese tots are amongst the cutest in the world and I love painting them.    Along the streets of Thimphu, I spotted this little girl with a younger brother proprietorially clutching a puppy. She was busy shooing away a curious ginger cat that had paused to look at the sight, just as I had!  Apparently, the children’s mother had popped in next door and left them with instructions for them to guard a pile of chilli pods spread out on a rush mat left to dry in the sun.

When charged with guarding a castle, somebody’s pair of jeans waved about on a stick is surely the right weapon to ward off marauders like ginger cats.
